Welcome! My name is Diana Abousaleh.
I'm the ESL Coordinator at Manara. I have a diverse background that includes: working as a video editor, teaching Spanish at a preschool, tutoring small groups of teenagers English and essay writing, and teaching adult ESL abroad for a year. Moreover, my background in filmmaking has taught me that creativity is perhaps one of the most under-utilized human characteristics when it comes to teaching. I like to remind students that creativity is an important aspect of writing and speaking. With that said, I encourage them to take chances and use language creatively to express themselves. This is my first year at Manara and I can't wait to learn and grow with the students!
What is ESL?
You may be wondering to yourself, what is ESL?
ESL stands for English as a Second Language.
The goal of the English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) Program is to empower non-English-speaking and limited-English-speaking students to reach English fluency in listening, speaking, reading and writing and to perform academically at the average grade level of their peers. It is my job to provide English language support for students. Depending on your child’s level of proficiency, I will provide services each week on a specific day at a specific time.
But beyond that, my current goal is also to be mindful of the students' emotional well-being during these times. At some point, we will look back at this time and reflect on all that happened. That day will come! In the meantime, we will continue to figure this out together.
I am looking forward to continue to support students academically and in their day-to-day lives as we navigate through these weird times!
